The certificate you print at the end of the course is often just a temporary certificate that you can use on the waters while you wait for the permanent one to arrive.
There are a few exceptions, for example for the Michigan Boating course the certificate you print is permanent. On the other hand, New Jersey and New Hampshire have an in-person exam to do after the online course so the course completion certificate printed online is not a valid form of proof.
