Any motorized boat operator over 12 years old is required by Alabama law to pass a boater safety course and carry a boater education card.

Registration requirements
Students taking the Alabama course may be required to provide additional information during registration. This may include:
- Eye color
- Hair color
- Driver’s license number
- Other state-required information
Course expiration and extensions
Alabama courses expire after 90 days.
Extensions are available for the following course options:
- Boaterexam
- Boat-Ed
- Boat-Ed+
Final exam
The final exam includes 60 questions. Students must score 80% or higher to pass.
Students have unlimited attempts to pass the final exam.
After completing the course
For Boaterexam and Boat-Ed, students do not receive a temporary card after completing the course.
For Boat-Ed+, students can print a temporary card after completion. The official certificate is mailed by the state.
Replacement cards
Replacement cards are handled by the state of Alabama. Students who need a replacement card should follow Alabama’s state replacement card process.
