Who needs to take this course?
You need boater education if you are older than 12 years old, are unsupervised, and will be operating a vessel powered by a motor of more than 10 horsepower in Maine.
You also need boater education if you are 16 or 17 years old and will be operating a personal watercraft.

Registration requirements
Students taking the Maine course may be required to provide:

Maine courses expire after 90 days.
Extensions are available for the following course option:
- Boat-Ed
Quizzes and final exam
Boat-Ed: Students must score 80% or higher on quizzes or redo the unit. Students must score 70% or higher to pass the final exam. Students have unlimited attempts.
After completing the course
After completing a Maine course, students can immediately print their temporary certificate.
The physical card typically arrives in 3-5 weeks.
Age and operator requirements
Anyone under the age of 12 may not operate a motorboat powered by more than 10 horsepower unless under the immediate supervision of a person in the motorboat who is at least 16 years old.
No one under 16 years old may operate a personal watercraft.
Anyone 16 or 17 years old may operate a personal watercraft if they:
- Are accompanied on board by a person 18 years old or older
- Have successfully completed an approved safety education course and carry proof of age and course completion on board
