Who needs to take this course?
All boaters between 12 and 15 years old must have an Oklahoma Boater Education Card to operate any motorized watercraft over 10 horsepower or a sailboat 16 feet or longer.

Quizzes and final exam
Exam requirements may vary by course option.
Boaterexam: Quizzes include 10 questions. Students must score 70% or higher to pass or they must redo the unit. The final exam includes 60 questions, and students must score 80% or higher to pass. Students have unlimited attempts.
Boat-Ed: Quizzes include 10 questions. Students must score 70% or higher to pass or they must redo the unit. The final exam includes 60 questions, and students must score 80% or higher to pass. Students have unlimited attempts.
BoatSmart!: Quizzes include 10 questions and have a 24-minute time limit. Students must score 70% or higher to pass or they must retake the module. The final exam includes 50 questions and has a 1 hour 15 minute time limit. Students must score 70% or higher to pass. Students have unlimited attempts.
After completing the course
After completing an Oklahoma course, students can print their temporary card or permanent certificate, depending on the course option.
The physical card typically arrives in 3-5 weeks.
Age and operator requirements
A child under 12 years old may not operate a motorized vessel of 10 horsepower or more or a sailboat over 16 feet under any circumstances.
A child over 12 years old but under 16 years old may operate a motorized vessel over 10 horsepower, a sailboat over 16 feet, or a personal watercraft if all of the following conditions are met:
- They have successfully completed an approved boating safety education course or passed a proctored equivalency examination
- They have received an Oklahoma Boater Education Certificate
- They are supervised by a competent person who is at least 18 years old
If the vessel is not a personal watercraft, the supervising person must be on board and in a position to take immediate control of the vessel.
If the vessel is a personal watercraft, the supervising person must visually supervise within 500 yards of the personal watercraft.
